New Zealand marks Waitangi Day each year on 6 February, commemorating the first signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in 1840. In 2026, Waitangi Day falls on a Friday, meaning most workers are entitled to a paid public holiday and a long weekend.Unlike Easter, Christmas Day, or Anzac Day before 1pm, Waitangi Day does not come with mandatory trading restrictions. As a result, many businesses across the country will operate largely as normal.

What’s open?
Shops, supermarkets, shopping malls, cafes, restaurants and other hospitality venues are generally open on Waitangi Day. However, businesses can choose to close or run reduced hours, so customers are advised to check opening times in advance. Supermarkets and malls may also operate on shorter schedules depending on location.

When do surcharges apply?
Because Waitangi Day is a public holiday, some businesses-particularly in the hospitality sector—may apply a surcharge, often around 15 percent. This helps cover the higher wage costs, as employees working on a public holiday are entitled to time-and-a-half pay and an alternative day off if it is their usual working day.Businesses that charge a surcharge are required to clearly inform customers. This can be done through signage, notices on websites, or by advising customers verbally before ordering or paying. If customers believe they were not properly informed, complaints can be made to the Commerce Commission.

What’s going on around the country?
A major public festival takes place at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands, beginning with a dawn service at 5am in Te Whare Rūnanga. For those unable to attend, events are being held nationwide, with government funding supporting 29 community celebrations.Councils across Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and other centres are hosting free events featuring cultural performances, music, family activities and kai, offering New Zealanders plenty of ways to reflect, connect and celebrate Waitangi Day 2026.
