No Internet After Virgin Router Firmware Update – What to Do

If your WiFi suddenly drops right after a firmware update, you are not the only one. It happens many times. Sometimes the Virgin Media router updates itself at night and when you wake up in the morning, the internet just doesn’t work. This is very frustrating.

In this guide we will understand why it happens, what the Virgin Media router lights actually mean and the simple steps you can try to get your internet working again.

Before You Start

A firmware update is meant to make the Virgin Media router better which means more stable and remove all errors. But sometimes it ends up breaking the connection. It does not mean that your router is not working. Most of the time the settings got messed up during the time of update or the router that needs a proper restart.

Step 1: The Simple Restart

This is the simplest way to fix any issue. Make sure to turn it off and turn it back on.

  • Switch off the Virgin Media router.
  • You have to wait for at least 30 seconds.
  • Turn it back on.

Sometimes the update does not apply cleanly until you have done a hard reboot. If your lights go back to normal and internet returns, you are good to go.

Step 2: Check the Lights

The lights inform you about the connection. After the update, if it is stuck on flashing white, red or some weird color that means it is struggling to boot properly.

  • Solid white/green = good.
  • Flashing white = starting up.
  • Red = something’s wrong.

If it is stuck, you might need to reset it. Hold the small pinhole reset button on the back for 10 to 15 seconds. That forces it to factory settings. After resetting you will lose all your custom WiFi names and passwords, but sometimes that is the only way to get it working again after an update mess.

Step 3: Use the Virgin Media App

This part is often skipped by most of the people. Install the Virgin Media app. It is actually very helpful. Open it on your phone while you are connected to your router’s WiFi .

Inside the Virgin Media app, you can:

  • Run diagnostics to check if the outage is on Virgin’s side.
  • Reboot the router remotely (It works better than the power button sometimes).
  • See if the update finished or got stuck in between.

Sometimes the app shows a message which shows that the update did not work and gives you a button to try again. Make sure you don’t skip that.

Step 4: Check Service Status

It is not always your fault. Virgin sends updates in batches and sometimes this makes a lot of people in an area lost internet for a few hours. Open the Virgin Media app or check their service status page. If there is a known fault, all you can do is wait. Annoying, but at least you won’t waste hours rebooting cables when the issue is external.

Step 5: Ethernet Test

Before you think that the router is of no use, you should plug a laptop directly into it with the help of an Ethernet cable. If the internet works with cable but not with wifi then an update might have messed up your wifi settings. You have to go to the router settings by the use of IP address which is usually 192.168.0.1 and reconfigure WiFi. Change the SSID, reset the password or even split 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands again.

Step 6: Reset and Re-Set

In this you will have to start fresh. Reset the router completely and set it up again. Use the quick setup option in the Virgin Media app. It helps you through naming your WiFi, setting passwords and re-connecting devices.

Some Essential Tips

  • Write down your WiFi settings before a firmware update. It saves you from resetting.
  • Keep the Virgin Media app installed. It will help you when something breaks and it gives you clues faster than waiting on hold.
  • Do not hurry to buy a new router. Most of the time it is a bad update and not dead hardware.
  • If you are dependent on WiFi for work, maybe keep a backup 4G/5G dongle around. Virgin outages are unpredictable.

Conclusion

A failed firmware update on a Virgin Media router is not the end of the world. Most of the time, a restart, reset or quick run through the Virgin Media app helps you to get you back online. It is annoying for sure but at least now you know the steps instead of staring at flashing lights.
